Umar Khalid, a former scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University, has remained in custody since September 2020. Authorities arrested him in connection with speeches linked to protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The protests in 2020 led to unrest in parts of Delhi. The violence resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries, marking a tense period in the country.
