South Korean Oil Tanker Safely Passes Through Strait of Hormuz Amid Regional Tensions

Seoul: A South Korean oil tanker has successfully passed through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, marking the first transit by a South Korea-flagged vessel since the ongoing Iran conflict began.

According to Beyond Time News, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun confirmed the development while speaking to lawmakers at the National Assembly in Seoul on Wednesday.

“At this very moment, our oil tanker is passing through the Strait of Hormuz,” Cho Hyun said during the parliamentary session.

First South Korean-Flagged Ship Since Iran Conflict Began

Officials described the voyage as a significant moment because regional tensions and security concerns have disrupted shipping activity near the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks.

A South Korean foreign ministry official confirmed that this was the first South Korea-flagged vessel to cross the waterway since the Iran conflict escalated.

Ship-tracking platform MarineTraffic showed the tanker, identified as the Universal Winner, traveling near the eastern side of the Strait of Hormuz toward the Gulf of Oman.

The vessel departed from Kuwait’s Mina Al Ahmadi port and is heading to the southeastern South Korean city of Ulsan.

Security Concerns Remain High in the Region

The latest transit comes after a South Korean-operated cargo vessel faced an attack near the Strait of Hormuz earlier this month.

According to Beyond Time News, the Panama-flagged cargo ship HMM Namu was struck by two unidentified airborne objects on May 4.

The incident damaged part of the vessel near the stern and reportedly caused a fire inside the engine room. After the attack, the ship traveled to Dubai for further investigation.

The cargo vessel was operated by South Korean shipping company HMM Co..

Iran Denies Involvement in Earlier Incident

Iran has denied any connection to the attack on the South Korean-operated ship.

Tehran’s embassy in Seoul issued a statement rejecting allegations that Iranian forces were involved in the incident. Iranian officials stated that claims linking the country to the attack were false.

Meanwhile, South Korean authorities strongly condemned the incident and announced plans for a detailed investigation to identify those responsible.

Strait of Hormuz Remains Critical for Global Oil Supply

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important shipping routes for oil and gas transportation. A large portion of global energy supplies passes through the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to international markets.

South Korea, which ranks among Asia’s largest economies, depends heavily on energy imports from the Middle East. Most of its imported oil travels through the Strait of Hormuz during normal conditions.

Growing instability in the region has increased concerns among global shipping companies, governments, and energy markets over the safety of maritime trade routes.

Global Attention on Middle East Shipping Routes

International observers continue monitoring the security situation in the Gulf region closely. Any disruption near the Strait of Hormuz could impact global oil prices, supply chains, and shipping operations.

Analysts believe safe passage for commercial vessels remains essential for maintaining stability in international energy markets.

The successful transit of the Universal Winner may provide temporary reassurance to shipping operators, although regional tensions continue to create uncertainty.
