Villages on Alert as Salal Dam Gates Open for Silt Flushing in Chenab River

Authorities in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district have placed several riverside villages on alert ahead of a scheduled silt flushing operation at the Salal Dam on the Chenab River. The precautionary step has been taken to ensure safety as water levels are expected to rise during the controlled release.

The Salal Power Station has confirmed that the spillway gates will be opened on May 21 at 9:00 AM. The flushing process will continue until May 30 as part of routine maintenance to clear accumulated sediment from the reservoir.

Chenab River Water Level Expected to Rise

Officials have cautioned that the release of water may increase the Chenab River’s level by around 2 to 3 metres. This fluctuation could impact communities located along both upstream and downstream stretches of the river.

Upstream villages including Dharan, Thanpal, Arnas, Sai Lanjan, Narloo, Gari, and Salmote are considered vulnerable during the operation. Downstream settlements such as Gujjar Kothi, Saidh Baba, Bidda, Kachi Khera, Talwara, Nambla, Vijaypur, and Seri are also under close watch.

Restrictions Imposed for Public Safety

To reduce risk, local authorities have restricted all non-essential movement near riverbanks during the flushing period. Activities such as crossing the river, grazing livestock, transportation along low-lying areas, and rafting have been temporarily prohibited.

Revenue officials, police personnel, and Rural Development teams have been instructed to jointly monitor the situation and ensure rapid response in case of any emergency.

Authorities Urge Caution

Officials have advised residents in nearby villages to remain alert and strictly follow safety instructions. Public awareness announcements are being made to inform people about possible water level changes throughout the operation period.

The administration stated that the silt flushing process is essential for maintaining the dam’s efficiency and ensuring its long-term operational safety.
