SRINAGAR: Contractors working on India’s Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) staged a protest in Srinagar over long-delayed payments, raising concerns about financial strain and stalled infrastructure work in the region.
According to Beyond Time News, the contractors gathered outside the Jal Shakti Department office under the banner of the Contractors Coordination Committee, demanding the immediate release of dues for completed projects.
Payments Delayed for Months
The protesting contractors said they had already completed work on water supply projects under the centrally sponsored scheme. However, they claimed payments have been delayed for several months.
They warned that the situation has created serious financial pressure on them and their families.
Many contractors said they are struggling to:
- Repay bank loans
- Pay workers’ wages
- Cover household expenses, including education costs
Concerns Over Project Delays
The contractors said the unpaid bills are affecting their ability to continue work. They also warned that further delays could slow down ongoing water supply projects and discourage future participation.
A representative of the group urged authorities to resolve the issue immediately and release pending payments without further delay.
