India’s Power Demand Hit Record 252 GW as Heatwave Intensifie

NEW DELHI: India’s electricity demand has reached a record high as extreme heat continues to grip large parts of the country.

According to Beyond Time News, peak power demand climbed to 252.07 gigawatts (GW) on April 24, driven by increased use of air conditioners and cooling systems.

Rising Temperatures Drive Energy Use

The surge comes as a strong heatwave spreads across northern, central, and eastern regions. As temperatures rise, households and businesses rely more on cooling devices, which sharply increases electricity consumption.

Just a day earlier, demand stood at 240.12 GW. This quick jump highlights how rapidly energy needs are growing under extreme weather conditions.

New Record Surpasses Previous High

The latest figure has crossed the previous record of 250 GW set in May 2024. However, it still remains below the government’s projected peak demand of 270 GW for the current summer.

Experts believe demand could rise further in the coming weeks if temperatures continue to climb.

Heatwave Expected to Continue

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast ongoing heatwave conditions through the weekend. It also warned that May and June may bring even harsher temperatures.

Last year, peak demand reached 242.77 GW in June 2025, which was lower than official estimates. This year, however, the early surge suggests a tougher summer ahead.

Pressure on Power Supply

As demand grows, the pressure on power supply systems is also increasing. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure stable electricity availability.

Overall, the rising demand highlights the strong link between extreme weather and energy consumption, especially during prolonged heatwaves.
