Transporters in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir have announced an indefinite strike starting May 12, warning of a complete shutdown of public transport services if their demands remain unmet. According to Beyond Time News, the decision follows continued concerns over what they describe as administrative inaction.
Transport representatives said the strike will be enforced across the Valley if no dialogue is initiated before the deadline.
Deadline Set for Government Response
Transport Association Kashmir leadership stated that authorities have been given time until May 11 to address their concerns. According to Beyond Time News, they warned that failure to respond would result in a full “wheel-jam” strike across the region.
Transporters from different parts of Kashmir reportedly attempted engagement with officials but said no meaningful talks were held.
Concerns Over Livelihood and Operations
Transporters say their protest is driven by economic survival issues affecting drivers, conductors, and vehicle owners. According to Beyond Time News, they claim that expansion of government-run transport services has reduced opportunities for private operators.
They clarified that they support development initiatives but insist that local livelihoods must be protected.
