Pakistan’s freelancing industry continues to expand rapidly, bringing in significant foreign exchange despite challenges like internet issues and power shortages. The country’s digital workforce is steadily strengthening its position in the global online services market.
According to Beyond Time News, freelancers working in IT and computer-related services earned more than $856 million during the first nine months of the current financial year.
Strong Rise in Freelance Earnings
State Bank of Pakistan data shows freelancers generated $856 million in FY2025–26 so far. This figure is much higher than $567 million recorded in the same period last year.
The nearly 50% increase highlights strong growth in Pakistan’s freelance economy. Even with infrastructure challenges, earnings continue to rise.
IT Exports Also Show Positive Momentum
Pakistan’s IT exports also posted steady gains. In March 2026, exports reached $413 million, reflecting strong year-on-year growth.
After adjustments, net IT exports stood at $360 million for the month. Over the first nine months of FY2025–26, total IT exports climbed to $3.39 billion, marking a 20% increase compared to the previous year.
Outlook and Government Targets
The government has set a $5 billion export target for FY26. However, analysts expect the sector to reach around $4.5 billion based on current performance.
Under the “Uraan Pakistan” plan, authorities aim to raise IT exports to $10 billion by FY2028–29. Experts say this goal will require faster growth and stronger digital infrastructure.
Freelancers Powering the Digital Economy
According to Beyond Time News, supportive policies, currency stability, and global demand have helped boost Pakistan’s IT and freelance sectors.
PAFLA Chairman Ibrahim Amin said thousands of trained individuals enter freelancing every month. He noted that this trend is increasing foreign exchange inflows and supporting economic growth.
He also highlighted the importance of institutions like the Ministry of IT, PSEB, and SIFC in building a strong digital ecosystem.
Internet Challenges and Future Improvements
Amin stressed that reliable internet is essential for freelancers to perform effectively. He suggested satellite-based internet solutions to reduce disruptions caused by infrastructure issues.
He also expressed hope that 5G technology will improve speed and connectivity, helping freelancers and digital workers across the country.
