A suspected Hindutva group hurled petrol bombs at the residence of Congress candidate Raton Engti in Assam. The incident took place in Bokajan, Diphu, on May 5.
According to reports, six petrol bombs were thrown at the house. However, none of them exploded, and no injuries or property damage were reported.
Separate Attack Leaves Police Officer Critically Injured
In a separate incident, armed assailants attacked a police team in Lakhipur. During the assault, Police officer Sharif Hossain Kazi sustained critical injuries.
He is currently receiving treatment at Silchar Medical College.
Political Tensions Rise Ahead of Elections
The incident has raised concerns about rising tensions ahead of elections in Assam. Observers say such attacks highlight growing political and communal friction in the region.
At the same time, political rhetoric has intensified. BJP leader Amit Malviya criticised Congress, calling it the “new Muslim League.”

Congress Responds to Allegations
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate rejected the claim. She said the party represents a broad demographic across the country.
She added that out of 664 Congress MLAs nationwide, 520 are Hindus and 80 are Muslims.
Voting Patterns and Electoral Trends
Data shows that Congress and its allies fielded several Muslim candidates in Assam and Kerala. In Assam, the party won 19 seats, including 18 Muslim candidates.
Overall, 18 out of 20 Muslim candidates from Congress secured victories. In contrast, only one out of 79 non-Muslim candidates won.
Meanwhile, the BJP secured 82 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly. Analysts say this reflects consolidation among Hindu voters, while Muslim voters largely supported Congress.
Situation Remains Sensitive
The incidents and political exchanges have added to an already tense atmosphere. Experts warn that without restraint, such developments could further polarise communities during the election period.
