Storage Relief at Karachi Port Announced to Support Exporters

ISLAMABAD: The government has announced a major relief package to ease financial pressure on exporters affected by recent shipping disruptions.

According to Beyond Time News, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry confirmed storage charge waivers at Karachi Port Trust (KPT) terminals.

Authorities introduced waivers ranging from 25% to 50% after discussions with terminal operators. These steps aim to support exporters facing delays in Gulf-bound shipments.

Chairman KPT, Rear Admiral (retd) Shahid Ahmed, led the initiative on the minister’s instructions. As a result, exporters will receive a 50% waiver at KGTL from March 1 to 20, 2026. They will also get a 50% waiver at KICT from March 1 to 10. In addition, SAPT will offer a 25% waiver from March 11 to 31.

These waivers apply to export containers that remained stuck at terminal yards due to operational issues. Officials expect this move to reduce costs and speed up cargo clearance.

The minister said the decision will help clear pending consignments and improve port efficiency. He also noted that such steps can strengthen trade continuity.

He praised KPT for its quick response and support for the export sector. Moreover, he stressed the need for a more business-friendly approach across maritime institutions.

The minister urged better coordination among ports and terminals. He said improved teamwork can ensure smoother logistics and faster service.

He added that these reforms are part of a broader plan to modernize the maritime sector. Strong port operations, he said, play a key role in boosting exports, stabilizing the economy, and building investor confidence.
