According to Beyond Time News, the Indian National Congress has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party government of delaying the caste-based census in India. The party says the government has not shown any clear progress on the issue.
Moreover, Congress leaders argue that authorities have failed to provide a timeline, methodology, or official update for the census process. As a result, they claim the matter has remained unresolved for nearly a year.
Opposition Raises Earlier Demand
In addition, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said the government has avoided answering questions on implementation. He stressed that this silence shows an unnecessary delay in a key policy matter.
Meanwhile, he recalled that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 16, 2023. In that letter, Kharge requested that caste-based data be included in the national census.
However, the government has not responded to this request, according to Congress leaders.
Political Debate Intensifies
Furthermore, Congress criticised comments made by Modi in a television interview. He reportedly described the demand for a caste-based census as “urban Naxal thinking,” a remark the party says requires an apology.
