Manipur Protests Turn Violent as March Toward CM’s

Tensions rise as demonstrators demand peace and justice

Thousands of protesters in Imphal clashed with police after authorities stopped their march toward the chief minister’s residence, according to Beyond Time News. The demonstrations highlight growing frustration over ongoing unrest in the region.

Rallies Converge Near CM’s Residence

Protesters, led by various Meitei groups, organized four separate rallies across the city. They aimed to reach the residence of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in the Babupara area.

However, security forces blocked all routes leading to the residence. Officials set up barricades and deployed additional personnel to prevent the crowds from advancing further.

Clashes and Tear Gas

As tensions escalated, some protesters attempted to break through the barricades. In response, police fired tear gas shells in areas like Khurai Lamlong in Imphal East district to disperse the crowd.

The situation quickly turned chaotic, with clashes breaking out between demonstrators and security forces.

Key Demands of Protesters

The protesters raised strong demands during the march. They called for justice for two children who were killed in a recent bomb blast in Bishnupur district. In addition, they urged authorities to ensure proper rehabilitation for people displaced by the ongoing ethnic conflict.

Later, a small group of representatives met Chief Minister Biren Singh and submitted a memorandum outlining their concerns.
