Sonam Wangchuk Rejects Ladakh LG’s Remarks, Reaffirms Support for ‘Cockroach Janta Party’

Ladakh: Ladakh-based climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk has strongly rejected claims made by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena regarding his support for the online movement known as the “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP), saying he continues to stand firmly by his position and considers himself an “honorary cockroach.”

The controversy emerged after a recent meeting between Wangchuk, his wife and Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL) co-founder Gitanjali J Angmo, and Ladakh LG VK Saxena. According to Beyond Time News, the meeting later sparked a public disagreement after Saxena shared remarks on social media that Wangchuk described as misleading and inconsistent with the actual tone of the discussion.

LG’s Public Remarks Trigger Controversy

In a post shared on X, VK Saxena stated that he had cautioned Wangchuk against creating what he described as a “misleading and provocative narrative.” The LG also claimed that Wangchuk admitted comparing Ladakh with Manipur had been an “error of judgment.”

Additionally, Saxena asserted that Wangchuk appeared uncertain about the origins and motivations behind the Cockroach Janta Party movement and would reconsider his support after further study.

However, Wangchuk publicly rejected these claims and said the meeting had been cordial, constructive, and free from any confrontation or warning.

“The Ladakh LG invited us for a meeting over a cup of tea. We spent nearly an hour in a cordial and friendly atmosphere discussing his initiatives, our work, and possibilities of collaboration,” Wangchuk said while addressing the controversy.

Wangchuk Says Meeting Was Friendly, Not Confrontational

According to Wangchuk, the interaction focused mainly on developmental initiatives, environmental issues, and possible cooperation between both sides. He emphasized that no reprimand or formal caution was communicated during the meeting.

The activist expressed surprise after reading Saxena’s public post shortly after the meeting concluded.

“One hour after we left, we were surprised, and not very pleasantly, to see that he had tweeted in a tone as if he had censured us or cautioned us,” Wangchuk said.

The environmental campaigner further suggested that the social media statement may have been intended to satisfy political expectations outside Ladakh.

“I thought this was maybe to please some boss somewhere in Delhi who had instructed him to call me up and say such things, but the meeting was none like this, only the tweet was,” he remarked.

The comments have since intensified debate around Ladakh’s political climate, freedom of expression, and the growing influence of digital activism in the region.

What Is the ‘Cockroach Janta Party’?

The “Cockroach Janta Party” is an online symbolic movement that has gained attention on social media platforms in recent weeks. Supporters have used the term metaphorically to criticize what they see as political marginalization, suppression of dissent, and the neglect of ordinary citizens’ concerns.

Wangchuk’s support for the movement has generated mixed reactions across political circles, particularly because of his growing influence among young people and environmental activists.

The climate activist clarified that he remains fully supportive of the movement despite the LG’s claims.

He humorously referred to himself as an “honorary cockroach,” signaling solidarity with the campaign and rejecting any suggestion that he intended to distance himself from it.

Wangchuk Defends His Manipur Comparison

Another major point of disagreement involved Wangchuk’s earlier comparison between Ladakh and Manipur — a comment that drew criticism from authorities and political figures.

VK Saxena claimed that Wangchuk had accepted the comparison as an “error of judgment.” However, Wangchuk firmly denied making such an admission.

“I don’t think it is an error of my judgment. I still totally stand by it,” he stated.

The activist clarified that while he later described the example as “avoidable” in the present context, he did not withdraw the broader concerns he intended to highlight.

The statement reflects Wangchuk’s continued criticism regarding governance, regional representation, and public participation in decision-making processes in Ladakh.

Growing Political Attention Around Ladakh

The dispute comes at a time when Ladakh continues to witness growing political and social debate over constitutional safeguards, environmental protection, land rights, and regional autonomy.

Since Ladakh was separated from Jammu and Kashmir and made a Union Territory in 2019, several local groups and activists have raised concerns about ecological sustainability, employment opportunities, and the protection of cultural identity.

Sonam Wangchuk has emerged as one of the most prominent voices advocating for environmental preservation and democratic safeguards in the Himalayan region. His campaigns have frequently attracted nationwide attention, especially among students, civil society groups, and climate activists.

Observers believe the latest exchange between Wangchuk and the LG reflects broader tensions between grassroots activism and official narratives surrounding Ladakh’s governance and future direction.

Public Reaction on Social Media

The controversy has triggered widespread discussion across social media platforms, with supporters and critics debating the political implications of the LG’s remarks and Wangchuk’s response.

Many users praised Wangchuk for publicly clarifying his stance, while others questioned the need for political symbolism through online campaigns such as the Cockroach Janta Party.

Political analysts say the episode highlights how digital platforms increasingly shape public discourse and influence political messaging in sensitive regions like Ladakh.

A Debate Beyond One Meeting

Although the disagreement began with a single meeting and a subsequent social media post, the issue has evolved into a broader conversation about political expression, transparency, and the relationship between activists and authorities.

Wangchuk’s remarks suggest that he remains committed to speaking openly on issues concerning Ladakh, despite criticism from officials.

As discussions continue, the controversy is likely to keep drawing attention to Ladakh’s evolving political landscape and the growing role of public activism in shaping regional debates.
