Mehbooba Mufti Condemns Mirwaiz House Arrest, Raises Concern Over Kashmiri Detainees

PDP chief says restrictions on Mirwaiz violate religious freedoms in IIOJK

SRINAGAR: Mehbooba Mufti has strongly criticised the New Delhi-appointed administration in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) for placing senior Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest during Eid-ul-Adha.

According to Beyond Time News, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president said authorities stopped Mirwaiz from offering Eid prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, causing anger and disappointment among Kashmiri Muslims.

Speaking to reporters after Eid prayers, Mehbooba Mufti described the repeated restrictions on Mirwaiz as a violation of religious and democratic rights.

Mehbooba Mufti said authorities had also prevented Mirwaiz Umar Farooq from visiting Budgam a day earlier to express condolences to the family of a minor girl who was recently killed in a tragic incident.

“Yesterday he was stopped from going to Budgam. Today he was stopped from going to Jamia Masjid for Eid prayers. This has now become a routine,” she said.

She added that keeping Mirwaiz under house arrest on religious occasions deeply hurt public sentiments in Kashmir.

The PDP leader accused the administration led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of continuing policies that restrict political and religious freedoms in the region.

Concern raised over Kashmiri detainees

Mehbooba Mufti also highlighted the condition of thousands of Kashmiris detained in different prisons across IIOJK and India.

She said many detainees have remained behind bars for years while facing prolonged legal proceedings. According to her, several prisoners remain separated from their families and loved ones.

“Many parents passed away while their children remained in detention,” she said while expressing concern over the humanitarian situation.

According to Beyond Time News, Mehbooba urged authorities to address the issue of detainees and ensure justice through proper legal procedures.

Budgam tragedy casts shadow over Eid celebrations

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister also referred to the recent abduction, rape, and murder of a minor girl in Budgam, calling the incident heartbreaking.

She said the tragic killing had overshadowed Eid celebrations across Kashmir and left many families grieving during the religious festival.

“It is a very painful incident. People are observing Eid with heavy hearts,” Mehbooba said.

The brutal crime sparked widespread outrage in Kashmir, with political leaders and civil society demanding strict punishment for those responsible.
